The first thing to do is select the “Email accounts” icon underneathe the Mail section on your cPanel homepage.

You should be taken to a page where you can fill out the details of the email account you wish to create including the name, the domain (if you host multiple domains), and password for the email account.

Once you have filled in this information to your satisfaction, you can press “Create Account”, and it will create the email account for you (duh!).

Now that your email account has been created, you can access it using one of the webmail clients of your choice. You can do this by returniing to the cPanel homepage and clicking the Webmail icon, again under the email section.

Here you will be taken to a few intermediate pages, the first one is rather pointless, and you can just click the “go to webmail login” icon.

The second screen is where you can choose which email client you would like to use to view and send your email. You can choose between Hoarde, Squirrelmail and Roundcube. This is your choice and you can pick whichever you like. I prefer Hoarde myself, but you can experiment with the different email clients and pick one that you like.

Finally you will be taken to the login page for the webmail client you selected. Simply enter the username and password that you used to create the email account earlier.

If you have done everything correctly, you should now be logged in and ready to send and receive emails from your own web hosting.

It is hard to properly stress the importance of creating backups of your website or Wordpress installation. Anyone who has ever lost files or website data will tell you it is not fun, but luckily keeping regular backups is a fairly painless process that will make things much easier should the unthinkable happen.

Cpanel is the most popular web hosting control panels, and there is good reason for it. The ease of making and restoring backups is yet another reason why I always recommend using a cPanel web host.

Making a backup in cPanel can be done by following just a few simple steps:

From the cPanel homepage, under the “files” section, select “backups”.

You will be taken to a page that will allow you to choose between generating a full backup (Files and Databases), or alternatively you could generate backups of your home directory (all your files), or pick a single database to make a backup of.

If you are making a Wordpress backup, you will want to back up both your home directory, and the database of which your wordpress installation uses. If you dont know which database your wordpress is using, you will need to open the wp-config.php file located in the root of your wordpress installation directory.

Note too, that you can restore any of your backups from this very same page simply by uploading the file of a previously downloaded backup.

Have you ever bought a domain name from a separate service than your web hosting company? Well, the process to connect the two together can be quite challenging for first timers. Today you’ll learn how exactly to perform that task, hopefully with as little difficulty as possible.

Like most webmasters, your first choice will probably be to visit GoDaddy.com to buy your domain. Why? Because they’re the Wal-Mart of domain registrars. They supply everything, from domains, to subdomains, to email servers, and you can even opt-in for their web hosting package. Plus, they have a 24 hour tech support on duty to handle any of the issues you might have.

When you purchase your hosting plan, odds are that you’ll be asked what domain you want to use. Some web hosts let you modify this later, and some don’t. So, try and get it right the first time. Once you’ve done this, the web hosting company will feed your website to any computer that asks the web server for that specific domain.

After you purchase your domain, you’ll want to configure it’s nameservers. The first thing you’ll want to do is find your hosting company’s nameserver addresses. These will typically look like “NS01.HOSTINGCOMPANY.COM”. Write those down (at least 2 of them), and visit the site you bought your domain from. If you’re using GoDaddy, there’s a big box that says “nameservers” in your domain’s dashboard. Click on it. In the box that appears, select the option “I have specific nameservers for my domains”. Once you’ve done that, fill in the blanks under “Nameserver 1″ and “Nameserver 2″. They can be in any order, and you have to configure at least two of them.

Once configured, the process goes like this. You have a visitor, let’s call him “Tim”, and he wants to visit your website called “stuff4tim.com”. When Tim types your website in his address bar, his browser will contact an internet server and ask where “stuff4tim.com” is. The internet server will tell the browser the nameserver to contact. When the browser asks the nameserver where the site is, the nameserver will connect Tim’s browser to your website, wherever it might be on your hosting company’s server.

Hopefully by the end of this rather short tutorial, anyone will be able to visit your website by typing in your domain no matter what their name is. Remember that with some registrars, the time it takes to update the main internet servers can be up to 12 hours. So just sit back, relax, and wait for it to process.

Getting your website files onto your website is a fairly easy process. If you are new to web hosting you will see that working with files in your web hosting account is very much like working with files on your home computer.

There are two main ways to upload your website files onto your web host: through your web hosting control panel, or through FTP. In either case you will need your web hosting user name and password that was provided to you (usually via email) when you signed up for your web hosting account.

In this tutorial I will go over the process of uploading via FTP since the process is pretty much the same across most web hosting providers.

Download Filezilla Free FTP client and install it on your computer.

Launch Filezilla and go File > Site Manager and click the “New Site” button.

Here you will need to fill in the FTP details for your web host. This will vary from host to host, in my case, my host was just my website’s domain name (onlinewebhosting.info).

Change “Logontype” from “Anonymous” to “Normal”. Your username and password will be the same as what was provided to you when you signed up with your web host.

Click connect, and you should successfully connect to your web host. If for some reason it fails, contact your web host to make sure you are using the right login information.

Once you are connected, you will need to document root, which is where your website’s files will need to be placed. Do this by scrolling down in the bottom right panel and locating the “www” folder shortcut.

Drag all your website files from your computer into the bottom right panel.

If you have done this all correctly, you should be able to navigate to your domain in your web browser and see the pages you just uploaded!

Setting up your own blog has become extremely easy over the past few years. Today anyone can have their own blog set up within minutes, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I will guide you through the setup process I have used many times for myself and for clients, and you too can have a blog up and running in no time!

The first thing you will need is web hosting. This is just about the only thing you will have to pay for and really shouldn’t cost you any more than about $7 a month. I use Hostmonster.com, it comes with a free domain name, it’s super cheap, and you can use just one account to set up as many blogs as you wish!

After a couple minutes you will have received your web hosting account login information in your email. Go ahead and log in to the Hostmonster web hosting control panel using the information provided. You will find yourself at a “dashboard” with many different icons, scroll down and click the one called “Fantastico De Luxe”:

Fantastico can be used to install many useful web applications for free, one of which is Wordpress – arguably the best and most popular blogging platforms available today. Select Wordpress from the left menu to proceed to the next step:

Click “New Installation” to begin configuring your new blog:

On the next screen (see below) you will be able to configure some basic things about the blog you are about to set up. Select the domain you are installing it on (if you have more than one domain name). You can usually leave the “Install in directory” blank unless you know what you are doing and want a static non-blog homepage. For “Administrator Username” use your favorite alias, and whatever password you wish in the password field. Important: Remember this information as you will need it to log in to you blog to make pages and posts etc.

I always use the same alias in the “Admin Nickname” field and leave the email as-is. The site name should be the title of your blog, eg. “Ron Watson’s Fantastic Weblog”. And your description should be a short slogan or summaryof you blog like “The life and times of an aircraft mechanic”.

Go ahead and click “Install Wordpress” and cross your fingers! If everything went well you should get a success message after about 10-15 seconds.

Guess what? Your blog is now setup! Navigate to your domain name in your web browser and you should see a pretty empty blog with a post titled “hello world”.

Of course, to to make changes and additions to you blog and it’s template, you will need to log in. To do so, navigate to you control panel which will be located at yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Simply fill in the login information you used to set up your blog and away you go!

There you have it! Your own blog! Have some fun poking around the Wordpress “dashboard” interface and you will find that it is quite easy to make the changes and additions you need. All you have to do now is make posts and tell all your friends about your new blog! Good Luck!
