Getting your website files onto your website is a fairly easy process. If you are new to web hosting you will see that working with files in your web hosting account is very much like working with files on your home computer.
There are two main ways to upload your website files onto your web host: through your web hosting control panel, or through FTP. In either case you will need your web hosting user name and password that was provided to you (usually via email) when you signed up for your web hosting account.
In this tutorial I will go over the process of uploading via FTP since the process is pretty much the same across most web hosting providers.
- Download Filezilla Free FTP client and install it on your computer.
- Launch Filezilla and go File > Site Manager and click the “New Site” button.
- Here you will need to fill in the FTP details for your web host. This will vary from host to host, in my case, my host was just my website’s domain name (onlinewebhosting.info).
- Change “Logontype” from “Anonymous” to “Normal”. Your username and password will be the same as what was provided to you when you signed up with your web host.
- Click connect, and you should successfully connect to your web host. If for some reason it fails, contact your web host to make sure you are using the right login information.
- Once you are connected, you will need to document root, which is where your website’s files will need to be placed. Do this by scrolling down in the bottom right panel and locating the “www” folder shortcut.
- Drag all your website files from your computer into the bottom right panel.
If you have done this all correctly, you should be able to navigate to your domain in your web browser and see the pages you just uploaded!
